Organized Closet Design

I recently organized my closet. Why? It was simply a matter of self preservation. I am normally a disorganized person, not due to laziness, but due to too much work. I never had time to do the organizing that I needed to do. Unfortunately, by not organizing my closet, I found myself having to make time to recuperate.

My husband and I go to work at different times. Usually, he is out of the house first. However, the day that convinced me that my closet had to be organized, I had to go to work several hours early. The alarm sounded at an unreasonable hour, wakening me from a dead sleep. Mornings and I do not mix well, and I was only half awake as I stumbled towards the rest room. Since I wanted to let my husband sleep longer, I did not turn on the light. As I walk towards the rest room, which I have navigated many nights in the dark with no problem, I tripped over a shoe that had obviously bounced out of the closet when I had tossed two of them into the closet the night before.

Fortunately, I recovered from this stumble, but I should have heeded the warning offered by the lone shoe. After showering, I make my way from the rest room, still in the dark and wearing only the suit that God gave me. I again stumble over the dreaded solitary shoe, and as I try to right myself, my other foot catches on the sister of the first shoe, causing me to plummet onto the disorganized contents that filled my closet floor, narrowly missing the open closet door. I was never able to close the closet door, because there was always something in the way.

Regardless of my good intention of letting my husband sleep, I see the light come on as he hears the crash, a few expletives, and my whimpering. Needless to say, he was wide awake. After ensuring that I had not broken anything, including the closet’s infrastructure, he began to laugh, which further hurt my bruised pride, which matched my bruised and twisted ankle. I can now state that I have an organized closet. I wonder if I should be worried about my storage room, which I may take on next.

How did I Design my Closet?

One of the ways I designed my closet was to take inventory of everything I had that was going in the closet. Shoes, short blouses, skirts, pants dresses and folded sweaters. First I started with everything short, including blouses, skirts and pants. These were put on 2 rods, with one above the other.

I measured the blouses and skirts to see if they would fit the rods. Skirts were on the rod closer to the floor and the blouses were on the top rod. I divided these rods with a shelf to the floor for the folded sweaters. Then next to that shelf I hung a rod for dresses or longer items. If I did not have a lot of shoes, I would arrange then on the floor under the dresses.

Alternatively, I get a handing shoe rack that holds about 24 pairs and hang it next to the rod with the dresses. Coats and jackets are kept in a hall closet, for easy access for the different seasons. There was also a shelf put above the rods. These were used for purses, an umbrella, gloves and hats. By putting the blouses and skirts this way it gives you more room to hand these items. Sometimes I keep the shoe boxes and stack the boxes on top of each other by season.

Boots are not included the closet they are either placed in the basement or put in the hall closet on a small plastic boot tray. This way it will keep the closet clean and free from salt from in the winter months, and leaves and dirt the other seasons. I do have a separate closet in the hall next to the bathroom where I keep towels, hand towels, and face cloths. This also includes sheet sets, divided by size of the bed, blankets also divided by the size of the bed. With a little organization, it is easy to have easy access to basically everything in your closet.
